THE GUAJIRA DESERT
How to get there ?
First, you have to leave Santa Marta by bus to reach Riohacha, capital of the Guajira region. Once there, it is better to sleep in a "hostel" and take the road the next day to the desert.
Located in the northeast of Colombia, the Guajira desert brings together immense plains dotted with cacti, successions of sand dunes flowing into the Caribbean Sea and small lost houses.
There, the inhabitants or the indigenous Wayuu community make a living mainly from weaving, fishing and agriculture, including goat breeding. Handicrafts are very present in the culture, especially through the making of traditional clothes and the famous "Mochilas", colorful bags typical of the region.
